Brewing Beer - Public houses and the brewing industry
have always prospered in Worcester due to the abundance of
hops and a great beer drinking population.
Before the 19th century, inns and taverns produced their own
brews according to local tastes. When the larger breweries
began to appear they brought up public houses as outlets for
their own products. This, along with the introduction of bottled
beer, brought about the decline of "home brewing" pubs.
The first large scale brewery in Worcester was Britannia
Brewery at Barbourne, which was built in 1850. In 1886,
it was taken over by Spreckley Brothers Ltd. who were
brewers as well as wine merchants. The Spreckley family operated
the brewery until 1968.
