Fashion is a popular feature and Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum is offering visitors the experience of a full scale exhibition of vibrant contemporary costumes.  They have been designed and created by Kate Plumtree, costume maker to the theatre world, and many are being premiered in Worcester.

Some people will have seen Kate’s work before without realising it, as she has produced costumes for West End musicals such as ‘Wicked’ and ‘The Lion King’ and productions by the Royal Shakespeare Company, English National Opera and Welsh National Opera.  This fee for the theatrical is reflected in the exhibition.

Kate says:  “The spacious gallery at Worcester has become an explosion of colour, pattern and texture.  Costumes are everywhere – standing, sitting and even flying, all beautifully and imaginatively lit to create a truly theatrical spectacle.”

She uses the word ‘flying’ because ‘Worn to be Wild’, as the title suggests, is an exhibition with a twist; the costumes are all inspired by wildlife in Britain.  The design of each costume has been stimulated by the colours, shapes and characteristic features of different British birds and mammals, from the bright colours of the kingfisher-inspired costume, to the sumptuous fabrics of the ‘red deer’ and ‘wild cat’.  Each costume also represents a specific era of fashion from Medieval to the present day and visitors may enjoy the challenge of seeing if they can recognise the fashion era before looking at the labels.

With such tactile fabrics involved, pads of the different fabrics give people a chance to get a feel for the costumes and dressing up activities and interactive lights are sure to please both children and adults.
