The Pilgrimage Books: An exhibition of Artists' Books

The Worcester Pilgrim Project - Identity

The Pilgrimage Books exhibition has been commissioned by artworcs as part of The Worcester Pilgrim Project.

The Worcester Pilgrim is a major multi-arts project created by artworcs in partnership with BBC Radio Drama, Worcester Cathedral, University of Worcester, Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum and Singworks. The project comprises a site-specific production of a play in Worcester Cathedral, an exhibition of artists’ books, an early music education project in schools and audio walks in the city of Worcester.

The inspiration for the project came from the discovery in 1987 of the bones of a man in humble clothes buried within Worcester Cathedral, a privilege usually reserved for the highest in the land.

In November 2003 BBC Radio 4 broadcast The Worcester Pilgrim, a play by Worcestershire based writer Alex Jones. Drawing on the known facts he creates a fictionalised account of how this fifteenth century pilgrim came to be buried in such a place of honour. Artworcs has commissioned Alex Jones to re-work the play for performance in Worcester Cathedral with live Gregorian chant performed by the Cathedral Lay Clerks.

The early music education project is aimed at young people from Worcestershire Secondary schools. Participants learn about medieval pilgrims’ songs, and create new pieces inspired by their musical themes and content. The project is led by Cathryn Dew and Andrew Watts, both local early music specialists and will culminate in a performance at Worcester Cathedral.

The audio walks will lead the listener on an unusual journey around the city of Worcester. Artworcs is commissioning writers Kate Chapman and Charlotte Goodwin to work with Worcester-based community groups and using their local knowledge and experience they will use music and drama to create a sound track for the city.
