The Abberley and Malvern Hills Geopark stretches from Bridgenorth in Shropshire, through the hills of Abberley, Suckley and Malvern, and onto the open landscape of Westbury-on-Severn in Gloucestershire.

In the Victorian period this area, rich in outstanding geological features, excited the interest of natural historians.  Specimens from their original collections form part of this exhibition. Local landscape artist, Sandra Masterson, has retraced their steps to explore and re-interpret this beautiful and ever-changing landscape.

Sandra Marsterson says:-

“Being in the landscape, the activity of collecting soils as part of an ‘earth mapping’ process is central to my art practice.  The process of digging into the earth is a primeval act which helps to connect and bind the human to a specific place through the inner knowledge and respect that is gained by ‘working the soil’.  These collections of soils and plant materials are taken back to my studio and worked with to produce my artistic outcomes.  Throughout this project I have struggled to visualise the relentless slow crushing of time this landscape has endured whilst at the same time marvelling at the rich contrasts left in its wake for us to enjoy on our own doorstep today.”

This project has been funded by The Abberley and Malvern Hills European Geopark, the University of Worcester’s Faculty of Arts and the Arts Council of Great Britain.

To compliment this exhibition, Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum will be displaying objects from its own Geology collection.  As well as wonderful examples from the collections, there will be a selection of handling objects and information about the collections and the collectors, including storage and conservation.
