Inspired by popular culture, particularly
music, his work is meticulously crafted, vibrant and exciting
to look at. David Cox is particularly interested in popular
music such as Hop Hop, Jazz and Reggae. His objects can appear
simple and straightforward yet reverberate with complex feelings
and associations. His objects can be seen as props for stories
and performances or representations of them, but also stand
as individual sculptural objects in their own right. The exhibition
includes a new multi-figure installation, work seen at the
Womad festival and a range of smaller and medium sized works.
David Cox came to prominence through inclusion in the Crafts
Council's seminal touring exhibition Crafts in Performance.
Born in 1947, he trained as a carpenter and joiner before
beginning to make sculpture, furniture and toys in the early
1970's.
