A Roman Story - Marcus Vinicius Spatula

"Canabacus" by Steve Rigby While we learn more everyday about Worcester's past through historical research and archaeological excavation, there are many things which we will never learn about....

...we find fragments of Roman pottery, but we don't know who made it or what kind of dramas these remnants of the past bore witness to.

This is why archaeological reports never make the No.1 Bestseller's list !

Read an archaeological report about excavations on a Roman fort and you won't find details of battles, mutinies and tribal uprisings...... because of course you don't dig up the kind of evidence which can paint such a detailed picture of events. Original accounts of such military dramas do of course exist, for example in Caesar's Gallic Wars, but these only report on a tiny fraction of what actually happened - and then only for a small portion of history....

. ...and Worcester doesn't even get a mention!

Deansway 1986 - 4th century AD burial

So this is the story of Marcus Vinicius Spatula, his friends, relations, children and descendants. It is also a story about Worcester, as we now call it, and some of the things which may have happened during its history - although almost certainly didn't.!! It is a work of fiction, though factually correct where "facts" creep into it, and is designed for fun not history revision. It is also a story which hasn't yet been finished - although we've completed about 20 Chapters on Marcus himself. Apart from what happens after Marcus's death, there are all the other characters who would have filled Marcus's world who we don't mention - as well as those we do, but only briefly. Would you like to help us fill in the gaps or develop Marcus's world? From ideas to complete chapters, we'd love to have your contribution....and you don't have to be a kid to contribute!

So if you feel like having a go - contact the Webmaster (click here) .....and we will respond either by e-mail or by reporting on feedback through this page.

Remember, these pages are for you - not us!.......so if you want to change, add or contribute in any way to this project don't feel inhibited - just jump in!
