Greyfriars (21k)

The Franciscan Friary (Greyfriars)

The Franciscan or Grey Friars came to Worcester in about 1226 when they were given a site on the street known since as Friar Street. Ten or twelve years later they were given a second plot of land outside the city wall, and it was here that they built their church and cloister, and cemetery. The friars' mission was to preach to the urban population, and those who came to worship in their church would have passed along the lane through the earlier precinct, through the recently-enlarged postern gate in the city wall, and out towards the extramural precinct.
