The Cross (24k)

The Cross, the Foregate, and the Foregate Street Suburb

The Cross, together with St Nicholas's church (centre, left), and the Foregate was probably established by one of the bishops of Worcester c.1100 as a great planned suburb extending about 900 metres north from the old Anglo-Saxon High Street; only a small part of it can be shown on the model. Some time before 1200 the North Gate was built, cutting the suburb in two, enclosing only The Cross. To one side of the gate, the public latrine overhangs the city wall and ditch. The North Gate was demolished in the 18th century.
