St Andrew's (24k)

St Andrew's Church

On the slope above the quay stands St Andrew's church, of which the later medieval spire survives. The area around St Andrew's, Birdport, and north to All Saints' church, had been an enclosed property or haga leased in 904 A.D. by the bishop to the Mercian royal family. The river then came close to the bottom of the slope, and the haga would have included almost the whole of the trading waterfront; St Andrew's may have been founded as its chapel.
