Fort Royal (19th century)

Anonymous

Fort Royal glimpsed from the grounds of the Commandery in this 19th century print marks the steep rise of land to the east of Sidbury. The hill now takes its name from the fortification constructed to defend Worcester by the royalists from the parliamentarians during the Civil War. In 1651 this was the scene of the Second Battle of Worcester. Parts of the earthworks are still in evidence on the hill in Fort Royal Park, which was given to the city in 1913.
