The buildings of most city centre streets were on long
narrow plots with a short street frontage. These burgage
plots were laid out in medieval times, and allowed for
each premises to have a shop front and living accommodation
with yards and workshops behind. Many of the yards became
increasingly built up in Georgian and Victorian times.
