Springfield, Britannia Square (1937)
by H.Romer
Britannia Square was developed
between 1818 and the 1830s on open fields with a terrace
as well as detached and semi-detached houses. The centre
plot was filled with a large house called Springfield,
seen here as painted by H.Romer in 1937. During excavations
for the cellars in 1829, masonry and about fifty Roman
coins were discovered. Debate continues on the purpose
of the site, but both a fortification or a temple have
been suggested.
