59 The Tything (1892)

Anonymous

The continuation northwards of this suburb is known as The Tything. Once part of the parish of Claines, it was lined with small cottages which were replaced by larger houses in the 18th century. These cottages stood on the site of No.59 until the late 19th century. By the time of their demolition they were dwarfed by surrounding buildings. In the background of this 1892 drawing is the spire of the Presbyterian Church in Castle Street, built in 1865 and demolished in 1965.
