The Cross (1934)

by H.Romer

The Cross. To the north of the High Street is the Cross. This street was dominated by a cross in medieval times and was the traditional commercial centre for the city. This view painted by H.Romer in June 1934 shows the 18th and 19th century buildings around St Nicholas Church, which was rebuilt with its fine tower in the 1730's. The scene has changed little today apart from the traffic.
