The City Walls (1833)
by H.H.Lines

This view shows the city walls to the south of the Watergate as they appeared in 1833. The present Diglis Hotel can be seen in the background and the muddy shores of the River Severn are at the foot of the sandstone masonry; the Promenade was not constructed until 1844. Below the Cathedral is one of the few places that a sense of the size and importance of the medieval city walls can be experienced.
