The Watergate (1881)
by H. H. Lines
The Water Gate dates from 1378 and gave
access to the monastic precinct from the River Severn.
In medieval times the river was tidal, and so the gateway
would flood twice a day, creating a small dock where boats
could unload. A note beneath this drawing of April 1881
by H.H. Lines reads that the roadway has been raised by
four feet.
