The Electricity Works in Hylton Road in 1953, lit up to celebrate
the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The works were built in 1942,
replacing an earlier power station from 1903. By 1979 it had become
integrated into the national grid and was consequently demolished.
Today the only remnant of the site remaining is the derelict pumping
station at the rivers edge, while the rest of the area houses a trading
estate although it seems remarkably empty in comparison.
