The Silver Cinema (shown here c.1920) opened in 1915 in Foregate
Street following the closure of the Empire Music Hall in the same
building. The building had originally been built in 1835 to house
the Hastings Museum and Public Library. However this moved to a new
site in 1896 leaving the building free to be converted.
Following the cinemas closure in the 1930's it was demolished along
with both of its neighbours to make room for the Odeon Cinema. However
delays to its building, caused by the outbreak of the war, meant that
the Odeon was not completed and opened until 1950. Today the Odeon
stands as a classic example of art deco architecture in the city and
is still a very popular cinema.
