The Theatre Royal in Angel Street circa1925. A theatre had
stood on this site since 1780, but only became the Theatre Royal in
1884 when the building was bought by a group of amateur actors and
theatre enthusiasts and rebuilt. The glass and iron canopy over the
entrance was added in 1902, and the interior was re-fashioned in 1912
following a fire.
Unable to compete with more fashionable forms of entertainment and
badly in need of repair, the theatre closed its doors in 1955. Despite
many attempts to save it, the theatre was demolished in 1960.
Today an incomparable building currently housing Kwik Save stands
in its place. This was constructed setback from the road, like the
two adjacent buildings in Angel street, to accommodate a planned road
widening scheme which was never then implemented.
