The County Gaol site in Castle Street in January 2004. The
gaol was built in 1813 in what was Salt Lane; however its building
contributed to the renaming of the street to Castle Street. It was
closed in 1928 and used as temporary accommodation for the homeless
of the city. The facade was demolished in the 1930s, however several
cells remained until 1987 when they were finally demolished. Today
modern flats and townhouses have replaced the cells at the back and
Rowes Carpets stands at the front.
