The Lich Gate (marked red on the 1886 1:2500 OS map extract
on the left) gave access to burial grounds to the north of the
cathedral during medieval times. It was the last remaining cathedral
Lich Gate in the country before its demolition in 1965. The
following development commemorated the former gate in its name,
the Lychgate Centre, although this has recently been renamed
the Cathedral Plaza.
