Worcestershire
Young Archaeologists’ Club at the Commandery, August 2006:
Once again, the county’s young archaeologists
had the opportunity to uncover more about the Commandery’s
past, when they were invited to take part in the excavations earlier
this month. Around 30 of the Worcestershire Young Archaeologists’ Club
members were on site to increase their archaeological expertise,
having a go at a number of activities ranging from surveying techniques,
to wet and dry sieving. Perhaps most exciting of all, was the opportunity
to get muddy and have a dig in the trenches. After much hard work,
trowelling through some tough, sticky clay, their trowels hit stone!
We were delighted to uncover what appears to be an east-west aligned
wall, which may relate to one of the early medieval hospital buildings
on the site. And all on the last day of excavation! The wall was
cleaned up, photographed and drawn by WYAC members who have over
the last few months gained a wealth of experience and knowledge
of different archaeological techniques, through the club’s
monthly events and meetings.
About
the Club:
The Worcestershire Young Archaeologists Club has
been holding monthly events and meetings since its relaunch by a
voluntary group of archaeologists and teachers in November 2003,
with support from Worcester City Council and Worcestershire County
Council. There are now around 70 members, aged 9-16, who all have
the opportunity to learn about what it is like to be an archaeologist
and to be involved in important work such as field walking and finds
processing.
The club makes regular visits to local museums
and sites of historical and archaeological interest, and for three
days this month, members have had the chance to take part in their
first real excavation, as part of the Commandery Project. This has
proved to be a real success with all sorts of new skills being learnt
and lots of exciting finds coming out of the trenches, ranging from
pottery to cow bones.
