Welcome to Worcester City Museums and Galleries
THE COLLECTIONS - Enquiries & Object Identification

Museum staff are pleased to answer enquiries from all members of the public on a range of subjects. Details of these subjects are listed at the bottom of this page, together with the names, titles and contact details of the staff who will deal with your enquiry - see details.

Most enquiries can be dealt with quickly by the relevant member of staff using the Museums' and Art Gallery collections, books and other reference material. We will always do what we can to help as speedily as possible. You can help us to assist you in the following ways;

Leaving an object with the museum - If your enquiry is about an object, please leave it with us, (except for Works of Art, see below). The reception staff will fill out a form with you and issue a receipt. We will endeavour to have your object ready for collection with an answer to your enquiry within fifteen working days.

Background information about your enquiry - Please provide all the information you have about your enquiry, particularly if it is an object for identification, however irrelevant it may seem. We need as much information as possible from you to be able to help you properly with your enquiry.

Valuations - Please note that we are unable to give valuations. If you require a valuation, please contact a local auctioneer or valuer.

Works of Art - If your enquiry is about a work of Art, please do not leave the object with us. It should be possible for the Galleries and Exhibition Officer to deal with the enquiry on seeing the item, but it will be necessary to make an appointment. It is unlikely that a picture can be identified by it title or the artist's initials alone.

Please note that if your enquiry about a work of art is connected with porcelain or glassware, we suggest you contact the following local specialist museums.

Please note the procedure for returning an object to you, is explained on the back of your receipt. The collection point for all objects left as enquiries is the City Museum and Art Gallery. In the event of an object not being collected, the museum reserves the right to dispose of an object after it has been in its possession for six months.

Enquiries to view collections - If you wish to inspect a particular object in the museum collections, please ask to make an appointment with the appropriate member of staff. An enquiry about the presence of an object will normally be answered within fifteen working days of applying to the museum.

Enquiries from Artists about exhibitions - Please note that enquiries from artists wishing to apply for an exhibition at the Art Gallery should be addressed to the Galleries Officer. You are advised to send approximately six slides of your work together with any relevant information. All applications will be considered as soon as possible.

Talks and education - All enquiries for talks on specialist subjects will be passed to the relevant member of staff. General enquiries about museum education, school loans, holiday activities, workshops, etc., should be addressed to the Education Officer.

Careers in museums - Museum staff are pleased to give advice to people wishing to pursue a career in museums. All enquiries should be addressed to the Museums, Arts and Heritage Officer.

Donations and loans to the museum - We are always pleased to discuss the possibility of donations or loans of objects to the museum. You may have an enquiry about donations or loans made in the past, if you do please write to the relevant member of staff.
