Julius Olsson had no formal art training but learnt to paint
in London and on various journeys abroad. He moved to St. Ives in
1896, where he developed a reputation as a painter of landscape
and stormy seascapes. The landscape of Cornwall, particularly the
rugged coastline, was his principal source of inspiration
In many ways, Olsson, like other painters of his generation, found
himself poised between conflicting interests. His small oil studies
of the sea are astonishingly impressionistic, showing an intense
luminosity and a dramatic handling of paint. The colours have a
wonderful afterglow and there are no strong tonal contrasts. In
his more finished works, however, these aspects of his painting
become more subdued.
