The
Malvern Hills
by Charles Ginner
442mm x 599mm
Oil on Canvas
1996/24 |

(Isaac) Charles Ginner was born in Cannes, France, and studied
at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, before settling in London in 1910.
His early works were thickly painted but he quickly absorbed the
influence of Impressionism and Post Impressionism, particularly
that of Van Gogh, whom he studied on a visit to Paris in 1911. Paintings
from 1911 show him using small strokes and blobs of colour and a
strong expressive colour range. Gradually his work placed more emphasis
on overall surface texture and the delineation of form by lines.
n 1914 he published a manifesto which advocated a return to the
study of nature, the use of solid pigment, and the role of Cezanne
and the Post-Impressionists. His paintings became more concerned
with accurately observed form and appearances, recorded by an even
application of small, thickly applied marks. In The Malvern Hills,
thought to be one of his late paintings, spatial recession is minimised
by the close- toned and close-coloured surface.
