Field evaluation of the new Park & Ride car park site at Perdiswell took place in early 2000 (WCM 100621, Worcs CC), on behalf of Halcrow for the Worcestershire Transportation Partnership. Trenching was limited to the edges of the site, which was occupied by sports pitches, but the whole area was surveyed by gradiometer. This revealed a penannular feature, which was initially thought to be a potential henge. Subsequent trenching and a more intensive gradiometer and resistivity survey failed to substantiate the gap in the ditch, which was reinterpreted as a ploughed out round barrow. Later in 2000 the ring-ditch and a surrounding area were fully excavated (WCM 100766, Worcs CC). No features apart from the ditch were found; there was a NE-facing entrance. There was sufficient evidence from the form of this feature to allow it to be interpreted as an 'enclosed urnfield'; the weathering pattern of the ditch section suggested that it held palisade posts. These sites are unusual south of the Pennines, and this is the first example from Worcestershire. The site has been dated by pottery to the early to middle Bronze Age.                                                                                                                           Location plan

Field evaluation of a site at Perdiswell Hall (WCM 100736, Worcs CC), on behalf of Misters Brothers Ltd, encountered remains of the 18th century house, World War II activity, and extensive medieval features which may be associated with the medieval Perdiswell Manor. Finds included a small but very varied pottery assemblage, with imported sherds in several fabrics, a glazed floor tile, and medieval flat roof tiles. Further excavation is due to take place here before the proposed office development goes ahead.                                                      Location plan

A desk-based assessment of the Metal Castings site at Droitwich Road (WCM 100610, CPM) drew together documentary evidence for remains including a probable barrow and the findspot of the Perdiswell torc. This bronze and iron collar was found in 1840. This class of objects is dated to the early Roman period, and probably represents a development of late Iron Age symbols of power. The assessment has allowed the findspot of the torc to be fixed accurately.    Location plan
